ISP Photo Blog

In the novel, The Cardturner by Louis Sachar important elements in the novel can be depicted by the following images.

This photo represents a lazy boy with no direction. In the novel, Alton had very little motivation. He was content to just hang around all summer with nothing to do. The idea of working or putting in any effort towards anything productive was the furthest thing from his mind. This lack of motivation was creating conflict within himself because like most teenage boys its easier to think about getting up and doing something than actually doing it. Eventually his parents forced him to go out and help his uncle on a daily basis which he didn't want to do in the first place but found the experience was just what he needed.

The photo on the left is of an old blind man. Alton's Uncle Lester was blind and needed Alton's help to play the game of bridge which he loved. When Alton was asked to help his uncle he resisted at first but knew he had to give in. Alton ended up enjoying spending time with his uncle. More importantly, he liked being needed and relied on by someone. At this point in Alton's life he is changing from being a self centered teenager to a young man who enjoys helping others.

Before meeting his uncle, Alton had no intrest in playing bridge what so ever. He had never played a skilled game that required concentration. Before playing bridge with his uncle, Alton was playing childish games but now he is playing a game of concentration played my mainly adults.
